RESOLUTION NO. 47(b)-96 Re: GUN CONTROL LEGISLATION
On recommendation of Ms. Gutiérrez and on motion of Mrs. Gordon seconded by
Mrs. King, the following resolution was adopted unanimously:
WHEREAS, The Board of Education has repeatedly expressed its concerns about the
escalating levels of violence impacting our schools and communities; and
WHEREAS, For many young people today, fear of violence has obscured many previous
issues; and
WHEREAS, Gun violence is especially detrimental to public safety; and
WHEREAS, Governor Glendening has announced a package to reduce gun violence in
the state; and
WHEREAS, For the first time religious and civic leaders in Montgomery County have
united with leaders in other jurisdictions to garner widespread support for the Governor's gun control proposals; now therefore be it
Resolved, That the Board of Education applaud and support the efforts initiated by
Community Ministries of Montgomery County, Marylanders Against Handgun Abuse, and
Voices Vs. Violence to support gun control legislation and reduce gun violence in
Maryland.
