Taylor burned bridges with gun owners
The following letter was written to House Speaker Casper R. Taylor and released to the Times-News for publication:
I am always amazed at the ways that our leaders have of making decisions for the "good of the citizens," then when they discover that maybe they goofed, they backpedal and make themselves look even more foolish than when they started.

House Speaker Taylor, there is an old saying, "Walk it like you talk it." When Comrades Glendening, Kennedy-Townsend, and Curran got their Responsible Gun Act passed, you voted to approve it. Period. It is a wee bit late to start with the grand pronouncements and statements of "I was convinced that the Senate would not support the bill." In such volatile times, with gun crimes, especially HANDGUN crimes, in the news every week, do you honestly expect the citizens to believe that you were so naive as to think that this extremist measure would do anything but be approved? You are an educated man Mr. Taylor, please do not try to make we citizens believe that you are not a smart man as well. Your vote helped make Maryland the leader in restrictive private gun ownership. Please do us all a favor and refrain from any lamenting about your good intentions, and please stop telling us how the new law is such a trivial thing anyway.

Perhaps you have forgotten the photograph in the Cumberland Times-News in which you sat at the right hand of the Governor as he passed the bill into law, with the nation's leading gun control advocate, "Slick Willy," watching and grinning voraciously at the two of you. I could swear the caption did read "House Speaker Casper Taylor." Let's face it, Mr. Taylor, you made a politically correct decision on a politically correct issue, and now you do not want to face the realization that you burned your bridges with the responsible private gun owners of the local area.

It is interesting to note that the same people you helped impose more gun control upon are the same people who decide whether or not you will remain in a position to "help" them in the future. Let us hope when it comes time to vote, the citizens act as responsibly with their votes as you did with yours.

As I said at the top, Mr. Taylor, do us all a favor and walk it like you talk it.

Brian Patton
