• Senator Thomas Middleton is introducing legislation aimed at eliminating the 5% sales tax on shoes and items of clothing costing less than a hundred dollars during one week in August. A version of this legislation passed the House last year, but died in a Senate committee. The chairman of the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee, Barbara Hoffman, is still cool to the idea. It would cost about $6.4 million dollars in lost revenue and that says Hoffman, is money that could pay, for example, a lot of drug treatment in Baltimore City, but the bill continues to pick up support. The State's Chief Tax Collector, Comptroller William Donald Schaefer, is among it's backers.
