Senator, I know exactly what a filibuster is, and from what I read, you would have had some pro-gun Democrats (you needed just two more votes) helping you sustain it if you had not agreed to the "compromise" bill. I am not "beating up" on you. You contacted me and others to gloat about having "beaten" the Governor, and you made several statements which were factually wrong, especially regarding safety switches on handguns. I wrote to you to correct those statements, and to point out the obvious: that we are no better off under the compromise (which you said constitutes "beating" the Governor) that we were under the original bill. Instead of challenging me to contact Democrats, I respectfully request that you explain, in light of my statements regarding this bill, just how we "beat" the Governor, since both his original bill and the compromise achieve the same thing: an end to handgun sales in Maryland.

Giff,
Do you know what a filibuster is? You just don't stand up and talk. Any Senator can ask for a motion to end debate. If you don't have 16 votes on your side the filibuster is dead.

No one on the GOP side made any compromises. We watered down the bill more and we're still going to vote against it.

I submit "Right-To-Carry" bills every year. I have a "Prohibition Against Lawsuits on Gun Manufacturers" this year. I have an A+ rating from the NRA - of which I am a Lifetime Member.

If you can't trust what I'm telling you regarding the Governor's gun-grab, I don't know if you ever will. Besides, it ain't over 'til it's over. We still have 2 weeks left in the session. Two weeks in politics is a lifetime.

Are you spending this much time calling up the Democrat Senators? If not - why not? Why are you beating up the GOP when we're the fighting MINORITY?

I'm leaving now for Annapolis. Contact the Democrats - we Republicans already know where we stand on the Second Amendment.

Sen. Tim Ferguson
