DUNCAN ANNOUNCES COUNTYWIDE EFFORT TO IMPROVE
PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

At a downtown Bethesda intersection where a pedestrian was fatally struck while walking her dog last September, Montgomery County Executive Douglas M. Duncan will announce the formation of the Montgomery County Blue Ribbon Panel on Pedestrian and Traffic Safety. The Greater Bethesda-Chevy Chase and Greater Silver Spring Pedestrian Safety Coalitions, made up of state and county government leaders, business owners, public safety officials, civic groups, neighborhood associations and others, will also launch local pedestrian safety campaigns in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Friendship Heights, and Silver Spring to reduce pedestrian injuries and aggressive driving.
Joining Duncan at the ceremony will be the coalition's organizer The Honorable William A. Bronrott, Maryland State Delegate, District 16; Police Chief Charles Moose; Bethesda-Chevy Chase Chamber of Commerce President David Freishtat; Silver Spring Citizens Regional Advisory Board President Sally Sternbach; Silver Spring Citizens Regional Advisory Board Member Juan Sepertegui, who will present his comments in Spanish; Equals Three Communciations President Sue Morris, whose firm donated development of the safety campaign; and Josie Zell, a friend of Rosemary Martufi, the pedestrian killed in Bethesda last year, whose brother was also killed in a pedestrian accident.
Directions: From I-495, take the Route 355, Wisconsin Avenue exit south into Bethesda. Proceed about 1 ½ miles. O'Donnell's Restaurant is located on the left at the intersection of Wisconsin Ave. and Battery Lane. Parking is available in the O'Donnell's Restaurant parking lot.
PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Many of the 600 new brighter and more visible yellow pedestrian crossing signs that will be posted near schools will be displayed.
